To preserve our blessed land we must look to God… It is time to realize that we need God more than He needs us…. Ronald Reagan
It is just hard to believe that we are in 2016 already. Year of hope, opportunity, holidays and stuff. I really have to get my head right, you see it is stuck in 1969. Let’s see where this first blog of 2016 goes, shall we? There has been so much happening since my last post. I will try to catch you all up on some of the happenings. My current wife and I made copius notes through December so when it came blog time we could recall those details. For the last eleven days, we have been searching all over for those said notes. Can we find them – Heck no! So goes old age.
First, if you are reading this, you are experiencing my new authoring system for my blog. Trying some different technology to try to increase my efficiency to produce the blog. I post it several ways; to my website (www.drivelovercoffee.com), emails, Facebook, and hard copies. I am hoping this new system will reduce the number of steps required to get it loaded to these 4 distribution methods. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Let’s look back – the day was November 26, 2015. Ah, yes, Thanksgiving. There is a new family gathering place. Sven and Svenette provided the home, food and fellowship for this year’s celebration. A gathering of a mere 18 or so and they pulled it off. They have been voted in as CR Thanksgiving Bailey hosts for years to come. The meal was great and we had all the fixin’s. Playing Dirty Santa was a hoot as usual. We had some first time guests in the bodies of Sven’s parents (Pa and Ma Sven) and Sven’s brother and wife (Sven Bro and Mrs. Sven Bro). We loved having them and I am hoping we didn’t traumatize them so much that they won’t return. Sadly, November 26 is the birthday of my late mother, Fae. She surely was smiling upon our gathering.
Hawkeyes went 12-0 in the regular season. A record. The Hawks, my current wife, Sven, Svenette, Debby the younger elder, and the B all went off to the Rose Bowl. Murphy and I stayed behind. Here is a selfie of me on New Year’s Day. A real looker don’t you think?
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the days were simply blurred. Taking time from the blog, I had hoped for relaxation – mental and physical. Didn’t happen. Fortunately, I was able to avoid shopping at brick and mortar stores for the most part. On line shopping seemed the way to go. I was very satisfied because I got most things at a discount. I did make one or two shopping forays. Mainly for nostalgia. While in one store, I needed to use the “facilities”. Once inside I see a big sign that reads “Toilet out of order, please use the floor below”. So I followed the directions. Murphy didn’t know how to handle Christmas. He was totally confused as to what was happening but he did enjoy himself.
A gift of note that I received was a small drone. Yep, one of those whirly-gig things with propellers and such. This thing weighs about an ounce but is equipped with a still camera and a video camera. I have not tried those controls yet. While everyone was gone one day, I set it up and began to play with it. I got the propellers running. With my Air Force hat on, I sat down to seriously get this big boy airborne. I pushed the throttle, just a little and whoosh – off it goes. In less than a second, it accelerated, lifted off the table, rose up and hit the ceiling, and then crashed onto the floor as I had instinctively reduced the power. A few more attempts yielded similar results. Not wanting to break it right away, I decided to let it “cool” off a bit; maybe till spring before trying again.
Between Christmas and the first of the year, my family, excluding myself, and half of the state of Iowa packed and went to the Rose Bowl. Murphy and I had chair side seats in front of the TV. I was mildly pulling for them to win (See my selfie). They didn’t win but everyone seemed to have a good time.
Our Old Farts Coffee Klatch had a secret Santa gift exchange this year. Collectively the group pitched in and purchased a subscription to Bait of the Month Club for Jimmy, owner of Jimmy’s Grill & Bait Shop. We felt it was the least we could do after knocking over his display of live bait a couple of weeks ago. I had Billy Bob and gifted him a new roll of 2″ duct tape. He is always having to patch his sewer sucking hose. It has a tendency of spewing raw sewage all over a customer’s floor it seems.
How about your New Year’s resolutions? Did you make the usual ones? I did too. I resolved to go to the gym every day and workout. I also resolved to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. I also resolved to not make plans for the day because then the word “premeditated” gets thrown around in the courtroom.
I rear-ended a car this morning.. Just could not believe it. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn’t believe it… he was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, ‘I AM NOT HAPPY!’ So, I looked down at him and said, ‘Well, then which one are you?’ And then the fight started.
We who have seen war never stop seeing it. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. If I can make at least one person smile, or laugh till they leak, then my day was not wasted. Until we meet again –TA!
